Dhyan StreetMan Manages Smart Streetlights
For Town of Scarborough, Maine
Successful Migration from Echelon LumInsight CMS

City Of Scarborough

Customer

The Town of Scarborough, Maine is a city of some 70 square miles and a population of around 20,000 residents. Scarborough is part of the Portland Metropolitan area.

Partner

TEN (The Energy Network) is an independent energy services company (ESCO) that provides energy projects to government, K12, higher education, healthcare, and large commercial customers. TEN is part of the Duquesne Light Holdings, Inc. (DLH) family of companies.

Situation

Scarborough had chosen TEN (The Energy Network) to upgrade their 1,100 existing streetlights to high efficiency LED fixtures, using Echelon controllers and Echelon’s LumInsight cloud based CMS (Central Management Halfway through the project Echelon exited the smart lighting business and TEN chose Dhyan StreetMan to replace LumInsight.

Challenges

The Town of Scarborough covers a very wide area with a lot of wooded terrain. As a result, RF signals from gateways to controllers were often found to be spotty. In addition, 2020 pandemic travel restrictions made it impossible for Dhyan’s implementation team to make an onsite visit. The StreetMan software had to be deployed and the system migrated from LumInsight 100% remotely, with zero disruption or data loss.

Dhyan's value add

StreetMan’s auto-discovery features and zero-touch commissioning enabled Dhyan to locate all of Scarborough’s installed devices and redistribute the streetlight controllers to appropriate gateways based on signal strength, greatly improving network reliability. Dhyan successfully migrated Scarborough’s LumInsight cloud CMS to StreetMan without any data loss or disruption, and well within the planned timeline. Since StreetMan, a robust and flexible software, was backed by Dhyan’s well-developed and stringent implementation process, the migration was achieved entirely remotely, from thousands of miles away, without a single truck roll.

With Dhyan’s StreetMan central management software we have excellent visibility into the health of each and every streetlight which we believe will enable us to significantly lower our streetlight maintenance expenses. StreetMan’s GUI is intuitive and easy to use, and we are impressed at the depth of the information it provides.

Results

StreetMan’s advanced features allowed the Town to identify various network/hardware issues and redistribute the controller load among the gateways, thus stabilizing the network. StreetMan’s intuitive design made the process of migrating from the existing software to StreetMan quick and painless, and StreetMan’s auto-provisioning capability significantly reduced the provisioning time of a streetlight node. The migration was achieved without any data loss or disruption to the streetlight operations. Any lighting complaints from citizens are now resolved faster than before with the help of intuitive street views, maps, and troubleshooting tools.
